With many insurance companies leaning towards pay- as - you insurance, will we finally get to find out which sex are the best drivers. For years motor insurance companies have sided with women as they are supposed to cause fewer accidents, but will a little box fitted into your car give a different result?
A black box similar to the ones in airplanes will monitor the brake and accelerator usage. For example how often they are used, and with what frequency are they used.
This information along with total mileage and running times is then stored on a hard drive and sent to a handheld in order for the insurance to get reading.
This would mean that drivers that do not tailgate and use their brakes a lot less, would be in line for cheaper insurance. These drivers are safer and less likely to get into accidents. So I think a good indicator of safe driving is lower brake and accelerator usage per mile driven. If the insurance companies could get this data, they would have a better indicator of the type of driver insured.
Mike from Balham states that; "I am convinced that I am a better driver than my girlfriend. We both have no accidents, but I am sure she causes accidents when I am not with her. She is a ticking bomb. She tailgates everyone and hammers the accelerator and the brake with equal fervor. She wears out her brake pads quicker than I do and gets less fuel economy because of her driving technique. I know this but her insurance company doesn't. I think if car insurance companies knew how drivers actually drove, the good drivers would be rewarded with lower rates. Currently I pay more than she because of my sex and strangely, my credit rating. I would gladly record and provide detailed info of my driving to my insurance company if it lowered my rate."
