From Januray 2006 the government will be enlisting new measures to crack down on the number of uninsured drivers. This plans have been announced by the minister for road safety, Stephen Ladyman.
These changes to the road safety bill, will make it an offence to own uninsured car. The amendments supports the target set by the government to reduce the number car related deaths and injuries by 2010.
The current law allows motorist who have a vaild a licence to own an unisured car, but the law will mean that even if you vehicle is ketp off road, it must have insurance. It is estimated that unisured drivers rise insurance premiums for law-abiding vehicle owners.
The police will be given new powers to electronically identify and prosecute ininsured motorists.
Stephen Ladyman state that; "The vast majority of motorists are rightly fed-up with the small hard core of anti social motorists who drive without insurance. These new measures will mean that there is no hiding place for uninsured drivers."
The latest move by the government will please all motorist groups, who have campaiged to reduce the number of unisured driver on the road. Police plan to start using automantic numberplate recognition technology to identify uninsured drivers, this will lead to prosecution.
