Prestige car insurer gets glimpse of future.

Prestigecarinsurance.com sounds exactly like what it is. Car insurance for prestige car owners. You can't really argue with that. It doesn't matter how many times prestige car insurers read the name Prestigecarinsurance.com, that wont change. Try it. Prestigecarinsurance.com, Prestigecarinsurance.com, Prestigecarinsurance.com. Ok. As chief-Prestigecarinsurance.com writer, I'm admittedly struggling for a prestige car insurance-themed intro here, but in doing so, at least I'm getting Prestigecarinsurance.com's prestige car insuring message across. Whereas what does the name Caparo say to you? Well, as Prestigecarinsurance.com found out - The name Caparo may sound like an effeminates favourite caffeine-based mid-morning tipple - but it certainly isn't on closer examination.

Welcome to the blurry world of Ben Scott-Geddes and Graham Halstead. Not entirely happy with their lot of doodling and engine-tinkering respectively over at F1 big-boys McLaren, they thought they could do better for themselves if they waved goodbye to the non-stop glamour and grease of the world's best motor-racing roadshow, to bugger off and devise their very own nippy motor. Taking their combined expertise, Etch-A-Sketch and monkey-wrenches with them, they set about the impossible with gusto. And a certain Britishness that if bottled and labelled could be sold for zillions of quid.

Now they found themselves the centre of the attention of the motoring masses. And if they moved to their right slightly, the rest of us present and not so correct might be able to see what we came here for.

And that is - thanks for asking - the Caparo Vehicle Technologies T1 prototype. Not just any shapely chunk of Dutch Elm plained, and sand-papered to within an inch of its disease-ridden life to resemble something marginally road-worthy mind. Oh no. The T1 is the planets most exclusive prototype of a high performance road and track car.

Dramatically sculptured isn't quite the description to do the dreamy vision that started out in life as an extreme doorstop a modicum of justice. Chiselled by the hirsute hands of a madman, the 1000bhp-per-tonne T1 is the aspirational benchmark for a new chapter in supercar technologies, and you read that first hear at Prestigecarinsurance.com. Actually, you probably didn't, since I've cut and pasted this from the website surrounds of someone who can write. Lighter than Kate Moss, even after the syringe has done its job, the Caparo makes the Caterham look flabby. With twice the power-to-weight ratio of the Volkswagen Veyron the ultra lightweight T1 (which seriously weighs less than 500kg) is a purely British designed 2-seater which has been developed using aerospace and high formula racing technology. What the hell that means I do not know, but what it results in is this.

A 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds, 0-100 time of 5 seconds and a start to 100 back to stop time of sub 10 seconds. Which means time travel is amongst us folks. Nevermind all that Tardis nonsense - this, my prestige-car-rubbing-friends is the real Sylvester McCoy. Developing 500 galloping horses courtesy of its snarling V8 heart, the T1 is instantly the galaxies fastest accelerating (and braking) road car. Gate crashing the 'blink and you'll miss it' enclosure normally the preserve of certain Italian, German and occasionally other British supercars.

Not only is it more than adequate in a straight line, but also you'll discover it bends it like Beckham, gobbling up corners with the appetite of the Chelsea defence. Enough footballing analogies (although needless to say many premiership starlets will put it atop their Christmas wish list) and instead acknowledge the T1's 3g braking system that affords it such luxuries as being able to stay attached to an apex as it tackles it at twice the speed of sound. Awesome.

The T1's high power-to-weight ratio delivers phenomenal performance on the track, that's not up for debate, yet, thanks to the same fundamental principles of lightweight design in a car one-third the weight of the average family saloon, combined with a normal 15 gallon (70-litre) fuel tank, means a range unbelievably better than the average car of up to 500 miles (800km) on public highways.

And that is, according to the chaps with the answers and sweaty overalls to prove it - sufficient to tackle 7 hours of driving from London to Le Mans, a distance of 338 miles (544km), without refuelling.

Formally presented to an assembled throng of dignitaries and some balding Prince of a meaningless Principality at the worlds most prestigious motoring get-together, namely the Top Marques she-bang in Monaco recently; the Caparo T1 not so much stole the show as it did kidnap the event, take a photo of it, and post it back with a ransom demand. And it courted quite a crowd too. Amongst the gathered masses Prestigecarinsurance.com found some Caparo corporate gobs to force dictaphones into.

Like a fat kid in a sweet shop, commenting on the mould-breaking Caparo T1, Angad Paul, Caparo PLC's head-honcho excitably gabbled the following to Prestigecarinsurance.com: "This car is in a class of its own when it comes to overall performance; but it also addresses in the most dramatic way possible fundamental design issues facing the automotive industry today. The same approach to aerodynamics, choice of materials and efficient design, which have allowed us to achieve the world's most reasonably priced supercar, can be applied in equal measure to create affordable, safe, yet lightweight, fuel-efficient family cars." Which we think says it all really. Let's hope so anyhow, as representatives of Prestigecarinsurance.com went looking for the beer tent shortly afterwards.

Monaco was the first time that Caparo Vehicle Technologies had exhibited at any such event. The stunning T1 was created to demonstrate the company's ability to design and manufacture the world's first 1,000bhp-per-tonne road and track car, whose performance is close to that of a formula one racer. More than a concept, this ultra high performance car is designed for low volume production to underscore the company's technical know-how and competence in whole vehicle design. That's according to the official company press release I nabbed as I left the beer tent knowing full well I had more to write when I returned home. With deposits already being taken the hand built car will be available to the first customers later this year.
